Orion Foxwood’s Fixing & Working A Magickal Candle in Conjure: 2 Class Series @ online workshop
Nov 28 @ 7:00 pm – 9:30 pm

How to Fix, Dress and Use a Working Candle, known as “Setting Lights” in American Southern Conjure: 2 Class Series with Orion Foxwood

Candle magic, or “Setting Lights” as it is called in Conjure, is a time honored and effective practice across traditions. However, it is too often treated as simplistic and trite or complex and overly arcane. The actual effective practices are powerful, practical and use many items that are already in your spice cabinet.

In this two class series, participants will learn about the practice of dressing, fixing and working a magic candle including the seldom taught process of engaging  “the pillar of flame”, the wax and its power of memory, and the legacy of liquid fire.

In this 2 workshop series, Orion will share lore, techniques and practices that are often guarded as secret within this practice:

  • The philosophy of fire.
  • The magical properties of candle wax.
  • The life stages of a working
  • Sealing a candle for later use.
  • Building and transitioning power during one burn or across burns.
  • Reading the burn, smoke and wax for impact and guidance.
  • Understanding the concept of “fixing”, “loading” and working/burning.
  • The process of gathering power into the candle.
  • Drawing the “Light of God”.
  • Dressing, loading, butting a candle.

Orion will teach with a hands-on approach in these sessions covering:

  • Using a pendulum to assist in the selection of herbs, oils, stones and other allies.
  • Cleansing and baptizing the candle for its new life.
  • Selecting a time for the work using the day of the week, time of the day.
  • Multiple ways of using petition papers.
  • Ways to dress the candle including a selection of oils and a discussion about prayer spit, use of personal liquids etc.
  • Igniting and covering the power in the candle by pulling power down from the heavens, through the ancestors and through the oil to anoint the candle.
  • Feeding the candle (the oven using liquor, coffee grounds).
  • The working area for the candle (mirror, colored clothes etc.)
  • Demonstrate loading the candle with assorted items.
  • Marking and sealing the candle against all intrusions.
  • Drawing the light of God to the taper to the working candle.
  • Reading the burn (wax, smoke, and fire).
  • Extinguishing the flame and disposing of the wax.

This is an online, two part workshop series, Nov. 28th and Dec. 5th. The pricing includes online attendance at BOTH workshops and access to the recording/replays available after each session airs.  You can opt to attend the live broadcast or to watch the recordings at a time that works best in your schedule.  You only need a laptop, computer, tablet or smartphone and good quality wifi/internet to access the online classes.  If you have any questions please contact Winifred at winifred@awentree.com

Rediscover the Magic of the Mari Lwyd, an Old Welsh Yule Tradition @ Awentree
Dec 7 @ 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm

“If ye the ‘oodened ‘orse do feed, the rest of the year, ye shall not need.” Traditional Yule Blessing

The Mari Lwyd, was said to be a grey mare, and a Pre-Christian tradition that brought  good luck in the new year.

Join Melissa Pandina to rediscover the magic of the Mari Lwyd  and learn how to recreate this beautiful Yule tradition that is still done in some parts of Wales today.

About the Mari Lwyd

Known as the Mari Lwyd, ‘oodening horse or the ‘oby ‘orse, she lurks at the edges of our Wintery imagination. She is a horse figure created with a horse skull, adorned with ribbons and bells, that is paraded from home to home during Yule chasing out ill luck and ushering in good luck.  Engaging in “Pwnco” a playful battle of wits and giving children a fun fright, the Mari Lwyd brought merriment and celebration to the community.  Drinks and food are given to her attendants to ensure blessings and fertility of the land for the coming year.

During the evening you will create a realistic Mari Lwyd skull, made from cardboard, to take home with you at the end of the evening. While crafting, we will meet a real Mari Lwyd and look at historic photos. As we move onto decorating we will enjoy a glass of Wassail and discuss the Mari Lwyd, wassailing  and other British Isle Christmas traditions.  We will discuss how to incorporate these old practices into our own Yule celebrations, practice moving with the Mari Lwyd, and discuss techniques for working with the skull and connecting to the Mari Lwyd spirit. Finally, we will try our hand at Pwnco verses (think folk rap battle) and sing some wassailing songs.

Cost: $30 (class price includes materials cost)

Queer Pagan Spirit Cafe at AwenTree @ AwenTree
Dec 12 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Calling all LGBTQIA* (and Allies) Pagans, Witches and Seekers!

Queer Pagan Spirit Cafe at AwenTreeWe welcome you to join us for a monthly meet up for inspiring conversation, exploration and exchange of wisdom in a safe and supportive atmosphere.

The existing words and images of the pagan paths do not always reflect our relationships, our bodies, or our connection to the divine. Bring your truth, your passion, your questions and your answers. Let us come together, both LGBTQ* people and allies, and speak about our experiences within our traditions and how that fits in the wider framework of Witchcraft,  Paganism and Earth-Centered Spirituality.

All are welcome to attend, regardless of how you identify, and no one is expected or required to disclose their sexual or gender identification.  Only an open mind and respectful attitude are required. We welcome all ages from youth to silver haired. Multi-generational discussion encouraged.

Regardless of where you are in your spiritual journey, there is a place for you in our circle. Whether you cracked open your first book today or you are an experienced practitioner of The Old Ways and Earth-Centered Spiritual Traditions.

It is time for us to find our place at the table, stand in our power together and blaze our unique trail on the path.

What is a Queer Pagan Spirit Cafe?

A Spirit Cafe is intentional space for folk to gather and discuss topics important to them.  Spirit Cafes can focus on healing, death, or really any focus that the group chooses. The Queer Pagan Spirit Cafe at AwenTree was inspired by the Queer Spirit Cafes hosted by Temple of Witchcraft and will focus on topics relevant to Queer Pagans, Witches and Earth-Centered Spiritual Seekers.  Food and drink is not typically served, but we will have complimentary hot tea to offer at ours. You are welcome to bring a snack.

Who are the facilitators?

We will have three core facilitators.

Meet Kat Pangborn

Kat Pangborn, MAKat Pangborn, MA is a queer witch, an active member of Dragons’ Well coven and a First Degree initiate and priestess in The Wells Tradition. Meet Dan Lupacchino

Dan Lupacchino, LMTDan Lupacchino, CT is a Witch and High Priest seminary student in the Temple of Witchcraft. He is an active member in the Queer community in Hartford. He holds a B.A. in Anthropology and is a Licensed Massage Therapist and Healer in private practice.
