“If ye the ‘oodened ‘orse do feed, the rest of the year, ye shall not need.” Traditional Yule Blessing
The Mari Lwyd, was said to be a grey mare, and a Pre-Christian tradition that brought good luck in the new year.
Join Melissa Pandina to rediscover the magic of the Mari Lwyd and learn how to recreate this beautiful Yule tradition that is still done in some parts of Wales today.
About the Mari Lwyd
Known as the Mari Lwyd, ‘oodening horse or the ‘oby ‘orse, she lurks at the edges of our Wintery imagination. She is a horse figure created with a horse skull, adorned with ribbons and bells, that is paraded from home to home during Yule chasing out ill luck and ushering in good luck. Engaging in “Pwnco” a playful battle of wits and giving children a fun fright, the Mari Lwyd brought merriment and celebration to the community. Drinks and food are given to her attendants to ensure blessings and fertility of the land for the coming year.
During the evening you will create a realistic Mari Lwyd skull, made from cardboard, to take home with you at the end of the evening. (Each participant will make their own Mari Lywd to keep with the guidance of Melissa.) While crafting, we will meet a real Mari Lwyd and look at historic photos. As we move onto decorating we will enjoy a glass of Wassail (A traditional hot drink made from cider, spices and fruit served at Yuletide) and discuss the Mari Lwyd, wassailing and other British Isle Christmas traditions. We will discuss how to incorporate these old practices into our own Yule celebrations, practice moving with the Mari Lwyd, and discuss techniques for working with the skull and connecting to the Mari Lwyd spirit. Finally, we will try our hand at Pwnco verses (think folk rap battle) and sing some wassailing songs.
